Milan, Ohio And Edison's Birthplace

Today I visited Milan, Ohio, including the birthplace of inventor Thomas Edison.  The house where he was born, which was built by his father Samuel, is now a museum.  Although his family moved away from Milan when he was seven years old, a member of his family later reacquired the house.  It officially became a museum on February 11th, 1947, the 100th anniversary of Edison's birth.

Today, a statue of Edison sits on a metal bench, with his birth house behind them.

Near that house is a stone bench and a marker for the house.  Behind it are a marker for a canal that once connected Milan to Lake Erie and a brick wall.

Here's the house as seen from the street, which is named Edison Drive.

This is the back yard, which at one time included a barn.  It was burnt down by young Mr. Edison himself.

Here's the marker for the canal and part of the brick wall.  Somewhere behind the marker and the back yard seen above was the basin forming the south end of the canal.  According to our tour guide, during his younger days, Edison would learn some choice words from sailors whose ships plied the canal, which his parents did not appreciate.

After completing my visit to Thomas Edison's birth home, I drove over to a small park known as Milan Square.  It includes this sculpture entitled Young Edison, which appears to show his mother trying to teach him something.  According to the tour guide, he was home schooled.

Milan Square also includes this obelisk-shaped monument, topped by an eagle.

Across the street from Milan Square is a statue of Edison, holding a lightbulb and a phonograph, two of his more famous inventions.  His pose is similar to that of the Statue of Liberty, with her torch and tablet.  The pedestal is shaped like a buckeye nut.

Finally, here is the marker below and in front of the statue.  To casting the shadow seen at the bottom of the pic, I must plead guilty.

That's the report for today.  Stay tuned for more sights in Ohio after I visit them.
