Today I ventured westward and went into Kansas to visit Fort Scott National Historic Site, in the city of the same name. I checked in at the visitors center, which was originally the fort's hospital, seen here from its east side.
Next to the visitors center/hospital is the infantry barracks. To the right in the background is part of the dragoon stables.
The dragoons (soldiers trained to fight either on horseback or on foot) had their own barracks, seen here with the stables in the background to the left.
This is the post headquarters, with a mobile mount for a cannon in front of it.
Inside the headquarters were several complete artillery pieces, including these two.
These two buildings were quarters for officers, the closer one in this shot being closed for renovations.
Surrounded by the various buildings is this gazebo, which appears to be standing over a well.
My last shot was intended to be panoramic. It includes the visitors center/hospital, the infantry barracks, the dragoon stables, the fort's flagpole, and the powder magazine, which is the small red brick building topped with a white domed roof.
