As I mentioned a few posts ago, my father used to say, "You don't own cats. They own you." While reading
a post at HotAir this morning, I realized that its author understands the same wisdom about the relationship between humans and pets. He expresses the idea somewhat differently, as seen in the first five words of the title, "People Who Belong To Pets", and extends the idea to dogs, but he gets it right. In relationships between two-legged and four-legged critters, the former belongs to (
i.e., is owned by) the latter. An excerpt:
When leaving a room, many said they told the animals, "I’ll be right back" or something similar. "To do otherwise would be rude," one man explained.
If you belong to a dog or cat, none of this seems strange. [emphasis added]
