Cambridge, Maryland

Today I went to the west side of the Delmarva Peninsula, to the Maryland city of Cambridge, located on U.S. route 50 and the Choptank River.  Cambridge is the seat of Dorchester County (probably "Dorster Canny" in the Merlin dialect).  In front of the county courthouse is this statue of abolitionist and Dorchester County native Harriet Tubman, entitled Beacon of Hope.  A few leaves on a nearby tree are in the foreground at the upper left.

Also on the courthouse grounds is this book-shaped informative panel, with the statue, seen from a different angle, in the background.

After visiting the courthouse area, I drove to an area by the Choptank River, which includes Long Wharf Park and the Cambridge Yacht Basin.  Nearby is this round structure, which looks like it might contain water.  Behind it is a flagpole and some other things that will be shown below.

Behind the round structure above is this memorial to five people who received the Distinguished Service Cross.  If permitted an educated guess, I'd say that the five recipients were from Cambridge or at least Dorchester County.

Behind the Distinguished Service Cross memorial is this smokestack from the USS Potomac, which was the official yacht of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.  The small plaque toward the left is a memorial to Roosevelt himself.  To the right are a long pier and a bridge along U.S. 50 over the Choptank River.

This is the pier seen to the right in the above picture.  It was definitely for the birds.

From the pier, I took this shot of the Choptank River Lighthouse.  On top of its roof were another bunch of birds.

Finally, here's shot of some boats in the Cambridge Yacht Basin.
