Fort Raleigh

After leaving the Wright Brothers National Memorial, I continued southward and the westward to Roanoke Island and the remains of Fort Raleigh.  The fort was built in 1585 by English colonists, who later disappeared and become known as "the lost colony".  They named the fort after their patron Sir Walter Raleigh.  Originally constructed as an earthwork, the fort is now a national historic site.  Here is one side of the fort and a path leading inside.

Another line of raised earth is to the right of the entry path.

From the interior, you can see that one possible entrance is blocked by a wooden structure.

Also from the interior is a view of the path on which I walked in.

Near the fort is this stone memorial, inscribed and placed in 1896.

On my trip through this area in 2001, I did not visit Fort Raleigh, so it looks like I made up for a previous missed chance.  To learn more, besides the links above, go to OuterBanks(dot)com, National Parks Traveler and Visit NC.
