The Start Of World War II, And Today's News

On today's date in 1939, Germany invaded Poland, which is regarded as the start of World War II.  (Japan, which would become allied to Germany, had invaded China in 1931.)  A day earlier, a group of Germans disguised themselves as Polish nationals and attacked a radio tower in Gleiwitz, Germany (how Gliwice, Poland) in what today would be called a "false flag" operation, thus providing Germany with a pretext to invade Poland.  On September 17, the Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east, eventually partitioning the country between Germany and itself, until Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941.  Today is the 80th anniversary of the German attack on Poland.
