After I visited the Bodie Island Lighthouse, seen in today's earlier post, I continued southward over a bridge to the north end of Hatteras Island. The channel between the island and the long spit of land on which the lighthouse sits is called Oregon Inlet. Just after the bridge, there's a left turn which leads to a parking lot, from which I could walk to two things that I wanted to see. The first is the Oregon Inlet Life Saving Station, which looks like it's no longer in use.
I took another shot from a slightly different angle.
The other place I walked to is the Bonner Bridge Pier, which at one time, as the name implies, was a bridge. It has been replaced by the newer bridge above and behind it, which is N.C. Route 12. That's what I drove over.
The pier is also called the Oregon Inlet Fishing Pier, and fishing appeared to the intention of the two men closest to me in the next picture. The pier still has the double yellow line from when it was a road and a bridge.
I walked all the way to the end of the pier and saw these people fishing from one of the pilings of the modern bridge. A boat sails by on the left.
I walked back to the parking lot and the Bigfootmobile and took this last shot of some rocks near a beach, with the life saving station in the background.
If you're in the Oregon Inlet area, besides visiting the two sites shown in this post, you can also go fishing or camping.
