Bud Foster, who has been an assistant football coach at Virginia Tech for 33 years, has decided that he will be around for just one more, and will retire at the conclusion of the 2019 season. Like his former boss Coach Frank Beamer a few years ago, Foster will step down "on his own terms".
Foster and Beamer, as a certain saying goes, go way back. When Beamer was the defensive coordinator at Murray State, Foster played linebacker. In 1981, when Beamer was promoted to head coach, he hired Foster as a graduate assistant. When Beamer was hired by Virginia Tech in 1987, he brought Foster on as a linebackers coach. In 1995, Foster was promoted to co-defensive coordinator, serving alongside Rod Sharpless, who left the program after that season. Foster then become the sole defensive coordinator, a position he has retained through Beamer's retirement and the hiring of his replacement Justin Fuente. No other FBS assistant coach has been at his school for as long as Bud Foster has been at Virginia Tech.
