Music Break

Now that this month is almost over, I have found a set of songs to mark its last day.  First up is John Lennon's Nobody Told Me, from his (and Yoko Ono's) 1984 album Milk and Honey.  The video shows John and Yoko, along with his buddy George Harrison, TV host Dick Cavett, and legendary actor/dancer Fred Astaire.  I'd say that this was one of Lennon's catchier post-Beatles tunes, with some rather profound lyrics.

In 1983, The Human League released (Keep Feeling) Fascination, which was included on the EP of the same name.  As seen in the video, in which the band's instruments and equipment are all gray, the lead vocals bounce around between Philip Oakley, Joanne Catherall (the brunette), Susan Ann Sulley (the blonde), and Jo Callis (with the left-handed guitar).  The video also shows the rest of the band, which is Ian Burden on bass and Philip Adrian Wright on keyboards.  In the studio, Oakley, Burden and Callis would also contribute keyboard parts, their sound being synthesizer-heavy.  Today, only Oakley, Catherall and Sulley remain in the band.

On his 1995 Cover to Cover album, Jeff Healey included a version of the Stealers Wheel song Stuck In The Middle With You.  The song uses mostly electric guitars, but finishes with an acoustic guitar and piano.

One old favorite of mine from the early 1980s is Playing With The Queen Of Hearts by Juice Newton.  The video alternates between Old West role playing and her band performing the song.

To close, here is Roam by the B-52s, from their 1989 album Cosmic Thing.  The song is sung by Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson, without any contribution from male vocalist Fred Schneider.  Even so, he is seen in the video, along with guitarist Keith Strickland, touring bassist Sara Lee, and touring drummer Zack Alford.  The video ends with a still shot of the band's original five-person lineup, which included Cindy's brother Ricky Wilson on guitar, Strickland at the time being their drummer.
