As 2014 comes to a close and 2015 is almost upon us, here are my thoughts about some things going on, other things that have gone before, and just some other things in general:

Like most people, I can only rely on indirect knowledge when trying to figure out what I believe about the encounter between Officer Darren Wilson and Michael Brown. But from what I can gather, it's quite possible that had Brown been walking on the sidewalk instead of in the middle of the street, Wilson might not have even noticed him. Instead of arguing about whether Wilson was justified in shooting Brown, we'd be arguing about whether Brown is the same person as the large black man shown in that video robbing a store. No matter what we think happened that day, I believe that it would be good to exercise a bit of humility and realize that the grand jurors who decided against indicting Officer Wilson most likely know far more about the incident than the general public does.
When black people are killed, it's mostly by other blacks, and not by police. It seems that the people pushing the meme "black lives matter" apparently take it seriously mainly when the end of a black life can be blamed on white people or the police.
Back during the strange episode of President Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, I came to believe three things:
1. Conduct that occurs in the workplace, such as the area in and around the Oval Office, during work hours, between two or more co-workers is not a private matter, the opinions of the president's defenders notwithstanding.
2. The duty to tell the truth under oath applies to everything said under oath, without any distinction between public or private subject matter.
3. If the person facing impeachment were not Bill Clinton, but a Republican, my first two beliefs would have been adopted by the entire Democratic party.
I can recall feminists defining the term "feminist" as "a person who believes that a woman is a human being". However, when you observe how feminists treat women who have rightwing political views, it appears that the real definition of feminist is someone who says that a woman is a human being, but actually believes that only liberal women are human beings.
Every so often, someone likes to talk about so-called white privilege, as if not being oppressed is equal to being unfairly advantaged. Equating whiteness with privilege is nothing more than a politically correct variety of racial profiling. On the other hand, I will concede that there is a subset of whites who are indeed privileged. Some of their last names are Kennedy, Gore, Bush, Rockefeller, and the above-mentioned Clinton.
For some animal species that are protected by the law, the protection extends to the eggs or unborn offspring of the animal. This is more protection than that given to a human fetus.
If the methods used to perform an abortion were used to perform capital punishment, they would very likely be called "cruel and unusual", especially by people who support abortion. If these methods were used to kill animals, they'd be called "inhumane".
Which is worse, the waterboarding of certain terrorists in GITMO, or the acid attacks inflicted upon the faces of women in the Muslim world and in other places?
When Americans decided to prohibit alcohol production and consumption, they passed a Constitutional amendment giving the federal government that specific power. Today, the same federal government bans a large variety of other drugs, but without any amendment granting that power. Why, then, would an amendment be needed for banning alcohol, but not needed for banning other drugs?
According to an old saying, "He who robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on Paul's support." Such a person should not be surprised when Peter starts to complain.
If I were allowed to address Congress for about 30 seconds, the one thing I'd be sure to say is, "Illegal aliens are not your constituents." I would also like to tell all the business owners in America that "Illegal aliens are not your work force." Then, if I had a few second left, I'd tell both groups, "Get it through your thick skulls."
The left loves to preach what they call "diversity", which for some reason doesn't often seem to include diversity of opinion. But in any event, due to the large variety of ethnic foods available here in America, I've decided that the best way to celebrate American diversity is to eat it.
I'm convinced that if we somehow could harness the energy of little kids, no other source would be necessary.
There are probably some people out there who simultaneously believe that Elvis Presley is still alive and Paul McCartney is dead, with McCartney being replaced with someone who looks and sings like the "original", and plays the same instruments, including left-handed guitar and bass.
I have shopped at Walmart more times than I can count, but I cannot recall ever seeing anyone who resembles the people in those "People of Walmart" pictures.
There are two beings that love humans more than we could ever deserve. Each is the backwards spelling of the other.
