South of the city of New Bern, North Carolina along U.S. highway 70 is New Bern Civil War Battlefield Park, the site of a battle fought in 1862. Early that year, Union General Ambrose Burnside and naval Flag Officer Louis Goldsborough led an amphibious campaign against Confederate positions in North Carolina, which included the capture of New Bern. Near the park's visitor center is this concrete map of the battle, surrounded by a chain barrier. The dark line crossing it is the shadow of a tree.
Also near the visitors center is this cannon.
These ridges and trenches are the remains of redan 3, constructed by Confederate defenders against the expected Union advance. Today, the area is forested. Part of a wooden pedestrian bridge is in the background on the right.
I continued wandering around and found a birdhouse and a swamp.
I also found this large marker and a plaque made of wood coated with resin. If anyone knows what esse quam videri means, please leave a translation in a comment.
