I've decided to take a small road trip into the eastern part of Maryland, including a return to the first Mason-Dixon Stone, which is located at the southwest corner of Delaware. Today, state highway 54, the number staying the same in both states, passes by this stone. It is housed along with three smaller stones in this enclosure, just off route 54. The view looks north from a small parking area.
Behind the enclosure is a grove of trees that separates two farm fields.
Sticking my camera between two vertical metal rods, I took this shot, from slightly east of due south. You can see three smaller rocks, two of them behind the actual marker stone, and several coins sitting on the marker stone itself. One coin sits at just about the center of the metal marker on the stone. Everything both north and east of the stone is Delaware, while everything else is Maryland.
In this shot from the east, you can see all four stones, and the coins that must have been thrown by numerous people and which did not land and stay on the main stone.
Finally, in this shot from the west, the engraving on the west side of the stone appears to be in a somewhat better state of preservation than on the south and east sides. Again, you can see all the coins that landed around the marker stone instead of on it.
After visiting this Mason-Dixon Stone, I continued into Delaware and eventually back into Maryland.
