Bringing one of the most contentious political episodes in recent years to a close, the Senate voted to confirm the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, by a count of 50-48. The only Democrat to vote "yes" was Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska was the only Republican to oppose Kavanaugh, but voted "present" as a courtesy to Steve Daines (R) of Montana, who was attending his daughter's wedding. This was the closest successful SCOTUS confirmation vote since Stanley Matthews was confirmed in 1881 by a tally of 24-23.
