Union Canal Tunnel Park

Today I visited Union Canal Tunnel Park, which is near the borough of Cleona and the city of Lebanon here in Pennsylvania.  The park includes a remnant of the Union Canal, which once ran between Middletown, PA on the Susquehanna River and Reading, PA on the Schuykill River.  This remnant includes a tunnel that runs under Tunnel Hill Road, and which is the oldest transportation tunnel in the United States.  From the south side of the tunnel, you can see all the way through it.  I parked the Bigfootmobile on the aforementioned Tunnel Hill Road, above and behind what is seen here.

South of the tunnel, the canal curves toward an east-west direction.  Here's part of it, looking east.

A trail runs along the south side of the canal.  I followed it to another parking lot, which includes this historical marker.

I continued eastward along the canal and came across this boat that was floating in it.

Another boat, the Earl P. Lieb, sits on the north side of the canal, just right of the green shed in the picture immediately above.

I walked back to the tunnel and the Bigfootmobile and took this pic of the steps and dock near the tunnel.

I drove to another part of the park on the north side of Tunnel Hill Road.  An arch supports part of a path on the other side of the canal from where I stood.

Finally, I walked toward the north side of the tunnel, seen here a pic that's not too well focused.  The area includes a fenced-in deck and a table.

For more about the Union Canal, the tunnel, and the modern park, go to Lebanon County Historical Society, American Society of Civil Engineers, Uncovering PA, Visit Lebanon Valley and SAH Archipedia.
