Petersburg National Battlefield - Part 2

Here's more from my visit to the Petersburg National Battlefield.  After leaving Confederate Battery 8, I drove to the next stop along the park's main road, Confederate Battery 9.  This area includes siege fortifications, such as those seen here.

The fortifications include a cannon, a mortar, and what looks like a root cellar.

In this next shot of Battery 9's fortifications, my camera was focused - on two coniferous branches in the foreground.

Near the fortifications is this cabin, which includes a brick chimney.

There's also another cabin nearby.

The Battery 9 area includes this memorial to black Union troops from the Army of the James and the Army of the Potomac.  Like Battery 8 as indicated in Part 1, Battery 9 was captured by black Union troops.

My next stop was at Fort Stedman, which was a Union stronghold.  Next to the fort is this plaque, which is hard to read because it's in the shade and because there's very little contrast between its lettering and its background color.

Fort Stedman includes earthworks and a row of four cannons.

It seems that again I've found a good place to pause.  Stay tuned for the third and last part of my report from Petersburg National Battlefield.
