Now that we're over a month into 2023, it's about time I presented my latest set of songs. First up is singer/pianist Chi Coltrane with her 1972 hit Thunder and Lightning.
In 1970, the Australian band Zoot released their version of Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles. The group consisted of Darryl Cotton on lead vocals, Rick Springfield on guitar and vocals, Beeb Birtles on bass and vocals, and Rick Brewer on drums. Cotton and Birtles founded the band in 1964. The two Ricks each replaced earlier members. Springfield would go on to a solo career (and did some acting as well) and Birtles became one of the original members of the Little River Band, where he switched to rhythm guitar.
The Kingsmen, known (and investigated) for their version of Louie Louie, also sang about the Jolly Green Giant. As you might appreciate, the song reminds you to eat your veggies.
Guitarist Jeff Beck, who had left the Yardbirds and later formed his own group, also joined with Vanilla Fudge alumni Tim Bogert (bass) and Carmine Appice (drums) to form a supergroup named after themselves. This is their song Lady, which is mostly sung in a two-part harmony between Bogert and Appice. Is should not be confused with Lady by Kenny Rogers, Lady by Styx, or Lady by the aforementioned Little River Band.
To finish, this is an acapella version of Ríu Ríu Chíu by the Monkees. The song was first sung in Spain in the fifties - the 1550s, that is.
