Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom has died at age 96 at her family's estate in Balmoral, Scotland. She reportedly died peacefully during the afternoon, surrounded by family members. She reigned for 70 years, the longest ever for a British monarch. Her son Charles is now King and his wife Camilla the Queen Consort. His older son William is now the Prince of Wales. Charles succeeds his mother as the monarch not only of the U.K. but also of the 14 other Commonwealth realms, including Canada, and becomes the leader of the Commonwealth of Nations.

If you've read this blog, you might have caught me referring to Her Majesty by her World War II-era job of truck mechanic. She was the only woman in the royal family to have served in her country's military, and did so at her own insistence.
At her coronation, Elizabeth was asked what name she would reign under and replied "my own, of course". Charles will presumably be asked the same question, and will have options other than his first name, which would make him King Charles III.
