Random Musings #11

Once again, a post of this variety is long overdue.  In fact, it's amazing that I went through all of 2020 without making one, especially with all the stuff that went on during that year.  So without further ado, here's my latest commentary on various events.

When I read that the 1619 Project claimed that preserving slavery was a reason why the colonists decided to break away from Great Britain, I realized that this was a projection of the cause of the Civil War onto the American Revolution.  This would be the opposite of the "lost cause" or "states rights" view of the Civil War, which alleges that the Confederate states rebelled mainly because of what they saw as tyranny from Washington, D.C. just as the 13 colonies rebelled from the tyranny from the British government.

From what I understand, the Confederate states mentioned slavery in their Secession Acts, while none of the American founders ever mentioned any desire to preserve slavery as a reason to secede from the British Empire.  During either time, anyone who supported slavery would have had no problem saying so, since such people had no moral problem with slavery to begin with.  Thus, the idea that the American founders wanted to hide a desire to preserve slavery behind language about men being created equal doesn't seem credible.

It may be unfortunate when a politician doesn't accept a loss, but enough about Hillary Clinton and Stacy Abrams.

After observing President Biden, but also having observed President Trump and the aforementioned Hillary Clinton, I've come to think that the U.S. might need a maximum age for the presidency, along with the minimum age of 35 years.  Trump and Biden were each over 70 at their respective inaugurations, while Clinton was 69 on what would have been hers had she won.  Do we really need presidents who meet the minimum age requirement twice over?

In his Memorial Day speech, President Biden said that democracy is imperiled in the U.S. and around the world.  He's right.  Wokeness, cancel culture, critical race theory, social media censorship, illegal immigration, rioting, and hostility toward police are all threats to democracy.

Because the Colonial Pipeline is privately owned, its owners are responsible for its security, including its cybersecurity.  Thus, I don't blame the federal government or the Biden administration for the recent hack that the pipeline has suffered.  But on the other hand, I can't help but think that if the hack had occurred on Trump's watch, numerous people on the left would have blamed him.

While I don't (yet) believe that foreign entities hacked Dominion voting machines during the 2020 election, the hack on the Colonial Pipeline makes the idea that voting machines were hacked just a little bit less far-fetched.  This doesn't mean that I believe that there was no fraud in that election, only that whatever fraud occurred was domestic.

If you can successfully defend yourself from an accusation of wrongdoing simply by calling your accuser a racist, you are privileged without being white.

Since Brood X of the 17 year cicadas are out making noise, I've tried to imagine what it would be like having their type of life cycle.  The first thing you do after you're born is go to bed.  You then sleep for 17 years.  After you wake up, you have sex with as many partners as possible, pausing only to eat, relieve yourself, and sleep for the night.  The females among you eventually give birth, and then you all die.  Your children soon seek out a place to sleep, and the cycle starts all over again.  The sad part is that you do all of this without ever getting to know either your parents or your children.

Since so many children from Central America are being dropped (some literally) at our southern border, I have to wonder when the U.S. agreed to be the nursery for them.  If so many Central Americans want to become U.S. residents, maybe we should just annex those seven countries and make each one a state.  That way, we would reacquire the Panama Canal and would also give former President Obama his "57 states".  But then, maybe I shouldn't give anyone any ideas.

Congresscritter Ilhan Omar (D-MN) recently claimed that the U.S. has committed horrible atrocities.  Did she come to believe this before or after she immigrated here from Somalia?

It cannot be emphasized enough that believing that black lives matter does not require supporting the Marxist organization which goes by that name.

If it is selfish to want to control your own life instead of letting the government control your life, it's even more selfish to want to control someone else's life, which seems to be the intent of many in government.

You can tell that the term "social distancing" was coined by left-wingers, because it includes the word "social".  However, even when there's no pandemic, I would still recommend "socialist distancing", as in stay as far away from socialists as humanly possible.

If governments and businesses in many parts of the world celebrate your lifestyle for an entire month, you don't deserve to be called "marginalized".

When the Coca Cola company came out with their "be less white" training, I wondered if attempting to "be less white" would constitute some kind of cultural appropriation.

If being white makes me responsible for slavery, Jim Crow, the Crusades, colonialism, and other things done by past generations of white people, does my Polish heritage allow me to take credit for the defeat of the Turks at Vienna in 1683 by King Jan III Sobieski?

I can't help but think that Jeffrey Toobin could have used a cat filter.
