Once again, it's about time for one of these. To start, here's something relatively new from a musician who has been around for quite a while. This is Joe Walsh, with One Day At A Time from his 2012 album Analog Man.
The Ting Tings are an English duo consisting of Katie White (lead vocals, guitar, bass & percussion) and Jules De Martino (lead guitar, drums, bass, keyboards & backing vocals). But if you listen to their 2008 single That's Not My Name, from their debut album We Started Nothing, you get the idea that she gets called everything except her real name.
This next one goes back quite a bit. In 1973, Jim Croce released the album Life And Times, which includes the huge hit Bad Bad Leroy Brown and also the lesser-know Roller Derby Queen. The video shows a whole bunch of women who might live up to the song's title.
The 1979 Styx album Cornerstone includes Boat On A River, which sounds like something from eastern Europe. Guitarist/singer Tommy Shaw plays the mandolin, with James Young on acoustic guitar, keyboardist Dennis DeYoung on accordion, John Panozzo on bass violin, and drummer Chuck Panozzo on bass drum and tambourine. Perhaps appropriately, the band's name comes from a river - in Greek mythology.
To finish, here's one from the "I don't care what you think, I love that song" category. In 1975, the George Baker Selection released Paloma Blanca, the title song from their fifth album. While the song is in English, except for the title lyrics una paloma blanca ("a white dove") in Spanish, Baker is a Dutch musician whose real name is Johannes Bouwens. From what I can gather, besides Baker on guitar and vocals, the band includes Jan Hop on drums, Martin Schoen on bass, George Thé on guitar, Jacques Greuter on keyboards and recorder, and Lida Jonkman-Bont on vocals, including the last verse after a key change.
