Near the west end of Hilton Head Island are the ruins of the Stoney Baynard plantation. The site is located near the southwest end of the appropriately named Plantation Drive. Along this road is a small parking area, from which you can pretty much see what was the main house. Here's what you see after walking up from the parking area.
From the other end, you can see much of the inside of what's left of the house.
This is one corner between two walls of the old house. They were built of tabby, a type of concrete comprising oyster shells, lime, sand and ash.
This is the ruin of one slave house.
This ruin is of another slave house. These two are the only ones that I came across. The sunlit area behind the back part of the fence was the location of a tent platform, made by Union troops after they captured Hilton Head Island.
As the sign indicates, this is what's left of the kitchen chimney. Such kitchens were often separate from the main house. The tent platform was made out of material from the kitchen's walls.
