On my way out of Ohio, I had to stop in Marietta and see one last mound, which is situated in the middle of a cemetery, appropriately named Mound Cemetery. The mound itself is called Conus, and is the last remnant of the Marietta Earthworks. As I approached from the main entrance, which is southwest of the mound, I saw that it was covered with trees.
I started walking around the mound, and took this picture from the southeast. The sign toward the left says something to the effect of "don't climb the mound, use the steps".
I continued around the mound and found the steps. To the left is modern trash receptacle.
The top of the mound was covered with flat stones, which are likely a modern addition. The stone box at the center contains a time capsule, which was placed there in 1976, to be opened in 2076.
The mound is surrounded by a trench, which is in turn surrounded by an embankment, which is now only a few inches above the land around it. The embankment thus forms a convenient walkway.
Read more about the mound and the cemetery at Ohio Exploration, the Ohio Exploration Society and Touring Ohio. (The first two sites have similar names, but are otherwise very different.)
