Music Break

It's about time for a music break, because I didn't even get to make one last month.  Let's start off with some hard rock with an odd instrument.  On It's A Long Way To The Top by AC/DC, lead singer Ronald Belford "Bon" Scott lives up to his last name by playing the bagpipes.  The rest of the band back then (1975 or so) consisted of Angus Young (lead guitar), Malcolm Young (rhythm guitar & backing vocals), Mark Evans (bass) and Phil Rudd (drums).

Another group to use an odd instrument in hard rock was Slade, with bassist Jim Lea adding a violin to their first American hit Run Runaway.  The band also included Neville "Noddy" Holder (lead vocals & guitar), Dave Hill (lead guitar & backing vocals) and Don Powell (drums).

In 1988, a group calling themselves The Timelords produced Doctorin' The Tardis, a mash-up of Rock And Roll, Part Two by Gary Glitter, Blockbuster by The Sweet, and the theme song from the British TV show Doctor Who.  There's no particular odd instrument in the mix, but there are plenty of sound effects, including a police siren.  The video features a slightly-used imported American police car and some rectangular imitation Daleks, a race of mechanically enhanced villains seen on Doctor Who.  The video also shows the Lansdowne Monument and the Cherhill White Horse, both of which can be seen in this picture.  The Timelords would later change their name to KLF.

Speaking of Blockbuster by The Sweet, here it is.  The band consisted of Brian Connelly (lead vocals), Andy Scott (guitar & vocals), Steve Priest (bass & vocals) and Mick Tucker (drums & vocals).  This song is the source of the police siren used in the above mash-up.
