"German engineering" is pretty much a cliché, but the German city of Augsburg has engineered a way to accommodate people who like to walk and look at their smartphones at the same time, while seemingly oblivious to their surroundings. The city has installed traffic lights in its sidewalks, so that smartphone addicts don't have to look up. I first read this story at
IndiaTimes, because it had been put on
Twitter, but after a bit of
Googling, found some corroboration at
The Washington Post and the
Daily Mail. The earliest publication, however, appears to be at
TheLocal(dot)DE - a source from Germany.
